Back up your website using cPanel
If you are using a cPanel Hosting Control Panel, read on to learn how to:
- CREATE a Full Backup using the cPanel Backup Wizard,
- STORE a Full Backup on the server,
- DOWNLOAD a Full Backup from the server, and
- REMOVE a Full Backup from the server.
CREATE a Full Backup using the Backup Wizard
You can create a Full Backup using the Backup Wizard in four simple steps.
STORE a Full Backup on the server
By default, the Backup Wizard stores Backup archives in the HOME directory on the server.
The HOME directory is outside the PUBLIC_HTML folder where your website's files are held.
It contains lots of files and folders with strange names, and it is not difficult to make mistakes which might compromise your website when working with Backups stored here.
For example: when downloading or deleting Backup archives.
For this reason we recommend storing Backup archives in a separate folder within the HOME directory.
DOWNLOAD a Full Backup from the server
There are three ways you can download a Full Backup from the server:
- using cPanel's Backup Wizard,
- using cPanel's File Manager,
WHY download Backups from the server?
For safe keeping if nothing else.
Hosting provider terms & conditions often specify that you are not permitted to store files on the server other than for use with your website.
Files not used by your website could be removed by your hosting provider without warning.
REMOVE a Full Backup from the server
There are two ways you can remove (or delete) a Backup archive from the server:
- using the File Manager,
- using an FTP Client.
WHY remove old Backups from the server?
To avoid being in breach of your hosting provider's terms & conditions.
Hosting providers often specify that you are not permitted to store files on the server other than for use with a website.
