Reasons to install a Site Map

Site Map Extensions make it easy to publish an HTML Site Map in your website.

And to create XML Site Map URLs for submission to search engines.

When appropriately configured Site Maps:

  • indicate to search bots which content should receive priority attention,
  • inform search bots how often you modify your website content, and
  • help search bots efficiently crawl your website content.

Another way you can help search bots is by ensuring your website's Robots TXT file:

  • is not preventing them from browsing your website content, and
  • is pointing them to your website's XML Site Map URLs.

Should you use a Site Map in your website?

Yannick Gaultier, developer of third party Joomla! extension, 4SEO, thinks not, unless your website is very large.

Here's what he said in an interview with Joomla! Community Magazine in August 2024:

"It used to be that sitemaps would help discover pages on your site, but that's not the case anymore.

Sitemaps are there to tell search engines which pages you'd prefer them to crawl and analyze.

Sitemaps start to become useful when you have large sites, with a few thousands pages or more.

Google documentation says you don't need a sitemap at all under 500 pages."
