Cookie Control
Cookie Control is a legal requirement
GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations) became law in the UK and EU in May 2018.
GDPR incorporated and extended what was previously covered by the EU ePrivacy Directive 2009/136/EC.
This Directive required owners of websites visited by citizens of the UK and European Union (EU) to tell visitors which cookies were being used by their website and to ask for their consent.
Your website should prominently display a Cookie Message clearly stating that your website issues Cookies.
The Cookie Message should be displayed until a visitor confirms that they agree to your website's use of Cookies.
Example: by means of a Cookie Bar as used by this website.

About Cookies
Cookies are small text files stored by your web browser when you browse the web.
They are issued by websites to help visitors navigate efficiently and perform a range of other functions.
You can learn more about cookies at: www.allaboutcookies.org
1.1 First-party Cookies
First-party Cookies are issued by and can only be read by the website you are visiting, the issuing website.
They are used to support website functionality and usually expire when you end your web browsing session.
For this reason they are commonly referred to as 'session' cookies.
Example: functional cookies.
1.2 Third-party Cookies
Third-party Cookies are issued by and read by a third party (for example, an external vendor) rather than the website you are visiting.
They do not usually expire when you end your web browsing session, and can be read again by the third party when you visit another website which uses the same Cookies.
Third-party Cookies are 'persistent' and therefore quite intrusive.
Examples: cross-site, preference, analytic, marketing and targeting cookies.
Cookie control extensions
The Joomla! Extensions Directory (JED) lists lots of different cookie control extensions to enable your website to comply with UK & EU law.
Example: EB Sticky Cookie Notice Module.
You can view the full range of available cookie control extensions in the JED.

How do cookie control extensions work?
The extension will display a Cookie Notice to website visitors prompting them to agree to cookies being downloaded and stored on their computer or mobile device.
Upon their giving consent the Cookie Notice will disappear and will not be visible again until they clear their browser's cache (short term memory).
When they clear their browser cache they will be prompted again next time they visit your website.
Example Cookie Bar.
