Use the Media screen in your website's Dashboard to upload media files to your website.

Note: uploaded media files are stored on the server hosting your website's files in a directory called Images.

Media files are not restricted to common image formats like GIF, JPG and PNG.

You can publish other media format files in your website.

For example: PDF, audio and video.

Select the Media button from the Site panel in your website's Dashboard to open the Media screen.

Joomla! 5.3.0 introduced a new 'files' folder to the Media Manager

The new "files" folder makes it possible to organize non-image files (for example, PDFs) separately from images.

In the Media screen of new Joomla! 5.3.0 installations, a new root folder named "files" is visible alongside "images", but not in updated existing Joomla! installations.

If you have updated an existing Joomla! installation to Joomla! 5.3.0 then you will need to make some changes in your website's Dashboard to be able to organise non-image files using the new "files" folder.

Media Options

The Media Options button is displayed at the top-right of the Media screen.

Select it to view the permissions (or restrictions) which apply by default to the display of media files in your website.

You should consider the potential adverse impact on your website's security before making any change to the default Media Options settings.

JCE Content Editor

You may find it quicker and easier to upload image files using the JCE Content Editor whilst editing Articles and Custom HTML Modules.

We tell you how in our Working with Images article.

Search Field

The Search field will only search individual folders for images using your search criteria when the individual folder has been opened.

As of Joomla! 5.2.5 it is not possible to search for an image in all folders at the same time.

This fact underscores the importance of being organised if storing images in Media folders.

Folders make sense when seeking an image whilst editing an Article or Custom Module.

But not in the Media screen.

On balance we prefer to create folders for separate storage of uploaded images, sorted by topic.
