Joomla! Help Support Warrington Cheshire Manchester Merseyside UKGoogle define Bounce Rate as the percentage of single page visits (or web sessions) by someone who leaves your website from the page they landed on (the landing page) without browsing any further.

You can view bounce rate stats after logging into Google Analytics.

Google calculate two percentages:

  1. the bounce rate of any one web page,
  2. the bounce rate of your website.

What is a high Bounce Rate?

To quote just one source: "it is hard to get a bounce rate under 20% (but) anything over 35% is a cause for concern and anything above 50% is worrying". Source: optimisesmart.com.

High bounce rate generally mean low conversion of website visitors to whatever message you are trying to get across.

If someone bounces then they are leaving ASAP after arriving and you can't convert them to your cause if they don't stick around!

They may of course have arrived by mistake; maybe your keywords drew them in but your page content is not relevant to their needs.

Examples

They are looking for home design and land on your web design page (ouch!).

Worse, they were looking for web design and have found it but they leave anyway!

How can I reduce the Bounce Rate?

Marketers ask questions and then look for answers.

Website owners should be asking WHY their bounce rate is higher than they would like, and taking corrective action.
