You may have come across the term 'Privacy Protection' when purchasing domain names.
What does Privacy Protection mean?
Example: name, address, email and phone number.
Once registered, your details are published online by the registry in the public WHOIS database.
Such information is available to anyone searching for a domain name. It is also of course available to others, including marketing companies who may use your details to contact you with unsolicited information.
The UK Registry
Privacy Protection will not hide your contact details from the UK registry.
The UK registry (Nominet) does offer a free WHOIS Opt Out, but only to NON-TRADING INDIVIDUALS.
Is Privacy Protection worth having?
It is worth considering if you are a non-trading individual but there seems to be little point if you are a limited company.
1) Nominet (the UK domain registry) forbids trading individuals from using their free WHOIS Opt Out.
2) A UK company's contact details must by law be made public in the Companies Register at Company's House.
3) UK Companies Law states that you must publish company contact details on your website.
