Akeeba Admin Tools 5.1.2 Security Release
Admin Tools v5.1.2 like its predecessors v5.1.1 and v5.1.0 is a Security Release and rather special.
Reason: it addresses potential breaches of new GDPR Regulations which come into effect in May 2018.
What issues are addressed? Online data storage ones.
See comprehensive Release Notes for more details.
New features introduced with v5.1.0
Admin Tools v5.1.0 introduced some great new features.
If using v5.1.0 or later you will be able to:
- check whether user passwords are inside dictionaries of leaked password (disabled by default),
- manually unblock specific IP addresses,
- allow only specific email domains during user registration (for example, your organisation's email addresses), and
- choose if Admin Tools should write to the log file or not (required by GDPR).
Remove Failed Login entries from Security Exception Log
Prior to Admin Tools v5.1.0 the developer reports that the Security Exception Log had been recording both the username and password used by anyone that failed to log into your website.
Post v5.1.0 only usernames are recorded in such instances.
Are you using an old version of Joomla! CMS?
Admin Tools 5.0.0 will only work with Joomla! 3.4 or later.
Admin Tools 5.1, when released, will no longer support Joomla! 3.4, 3.5 and 3.6.
Akeeba state: "Older versions of Joomla! have known major security issues which are being actively exploited to hack sites."
Admin Tools Video Tutorials
In 2017 the developer issued a range of useful video resources to help you configure Admin Tools.
Some Admin Tools Tips
Web Appication Firewalls
No Joomla! website should be without a Web Application Firewall or WAF, especially if hosted in a shared server environment.
The WAF adds another line of defense between your website and the server firewall maintained by your hosting provider.
Find out more about WAFs in our Joomla! User Guide.
Back up before updating any 3rd party Joomla! extension
Any update can break your website.
Perform a FULL backup of your website (database and files) before installing any update.
