The Hacker News reported on 6 September 2021 that ProtonMail were recently forced to cede to a legal request in Switzerland (where the company is based) to share the IP address of a group of political activists with law enforcement authorities in France, despite stating on their website that: "No personal information is required to create your secure email account. By default, we do not keep any IP logs which can be linked to your anonymous email account. Your privacy comes first." Hacker News reported that "ProtonMail users who are concerned about the visibility of their IP addresses should use a VPN or access the email service over the Tor network for additional anonymity".
