Joomla! Help Support Warrington Cheshire Manchester Merseyside UKLets Encrypt is a FREE, automated, and open certificate authority (CA), run for the public’s benefit.

It is a service provided by the Internet Security Research Group (ISRG).

The ISRG provide a FREE digital certificate to enable you to add a secure HTTPS (SSL/TLS) connection to your website.

HTTPS offers end-to-end security between web browser and web server.HTTPS offers end-to-end security between web browser and web server.

The SSL certificate supports encryption of data transferred between your computer and the web server.

The ISRG Mission

The ISRG Mission is to create a more secure and privacy-respecting web through the distribution of SSL certificates.

Anyone who owns a domain name can use Let’s Encrypt to obtain a trusted certificate at zero cost.

Software running on a web server can interact with Let’s Encrypt to painlessly obtain a certificate, securely configure it for use, and automatically take care of renewal.

Let’s Encrypt will serve as a platform for advancing TLS security best practices, both on the CA side and by helping site operators properly secure their servers.

All certificates issued or revoked will be publicly recorded and available for anyone to inspect.

The automatic issuance and renewal protocol will be published as an open standard that others can adopt.

Much like the underlying Internet protocols themselves, Let’s Encrypt is a joint effort to benefit the community, beyond the control of any one organization.

FIVE reasons why we use Lets Encrypt SSL

When someone visits our web pages via HTTPS they now see a reassuring symbol in the address bar of their browser window.

A padlock in the Chrome browser

Now, when customers sign in to read our Joomla! User Guides, they know that their confidential login details are encrypted and i.e. protected from sniffers.

When we in turn sign into our website's Joomla! CMS control panel to add and edit content, we know that our user credentials are protected by the encrypted connection.

The resulting HTTPS connection prevents so-called packet sniffers from harvesting user credentials.

Encryption makes like more challenging for the hacker!

Google has indicated that using an HTTPS address for a web page will have a positive impact on SEO performance.

You may have read or heard of instances when moving from HTTP to HTTPS has resulted in a short term detrimental effect on a website's performance in search engines, including Google.

We believe however that the potential adverse impact is likely to be temporary if you follow some basic steps to reduce the risk.

These are outlined on various websites.

We summarise them in our SEO User Guide and recommend additional steps that JOOMLERS should take.

Lets Encrypt SSL certificates are FREE and you can use a different one with each of your websites.

Commercial SSL certificates are available at low prices but you need one SSL for each domain.

Even running a small number of websites could cost you £00s per year if you choose to add a commercial SSL to each one.

We acknowledge the critics who point out that Lets Encrypt SSL certificates  are domain validated i.e. can be added to a website by anyone, even the developer of a spoof website, without any external verification.

And agree that domain validated SSL certificates do not guarantee the trustworthiness of a website.

But they are affordable to everyone and do provide encrypted connectivity.

We recommend using a domain validated lets Encrypt SSL whilst you save up for a top drawer commercial one!

The recent support from the developers of the cPanel and Plesk Hosting Control Panels for Lets Encrypt SSL certificates has been an added bonus.

In the past it was usually necessary to ask for help from a hosting company's technical support staff when adding an SSL to your website.

Now you can do so at the touch of a button in your Hosting Control Panel.

We show you how in our WYNCHCO Hosting Guide.

This, for us, is a MUST HAVE feature when choosing a hosting company.

Recommended changes when you add an SSL certificate

Once you have found the Lets Encrypt button in your Hosting Control Panel it is very easy to install a Lets Encrypt SSL certificate.

But you should invest some time making some changes to:

  • the configuration of your website's Joomla! CMS, and
  • any Search Engine and Social Media accounts you use in connection with your website (here we focus on Google)

if your web marketing strategy is to fully benefit from the move from HTTP to HTTPS.

We outline these recommended changes in this article.
