The EU ePrivacy Directive

The EU ePrivacy Directive 2009/136/EC requires owners of websites which are visited by citizens of the European Union (EU) to inform those visitors that their website uses cookies.

And to offer EU citizens the choice of whether or not to accept these cookies.

GDPR

New General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) will become law in the UK and EU in May 2018.

We understand that these regulations will incorporate what was previously covered by the EU ePrivacy Directive.

We recommend that you check sooner rather than later what you must do to comply with the new regulations.

What are cookies?

Cookies are very small text files that are downloaded to and stored on a visitor's computer or mobile device when they visit some websites.

There are many reasons why cookies may be used by a website, including:

  1. to help improve user experience, and
  2. to enable collection of data showing how users interact it (example: Google Analytics).

Whilst a Joomla! CMS will work without visitors' computers downloading and storing cookies, some important Joomla! CMS functions do require cookies to be accepted by visitors.

Examples include many interactive elements, including completing transactions in an eCommerce checkout.

To learn more about cookies you may wish to visit the following link: www.aboutcookies.org.

How do cookie control extensions work?

The extension will display a Cookie Notice to website visitors prompting them to agree to cookies being downloaded and stored on their computer or mobile device.

Upon their giving consent the Cookie Notice will disappear and will not be visible again until they clear their browser's cache (short term memory).

When they clear their browser cache they will be prompted again next time they visit your website.

What about website visitors from outside the EU?

EU law only requires that visitors from within the EU are provided with the option to accept cookies.

If part of your target audience is outside the EU then it is possible to configure some cookie control extensions to only present a Cookie Notice to visitors from within the EU.

The Cookies CK Plugin does not include this option.
