Working with Content Editors
Which Content Editor should you use?
The default content editor in a Joomla! CMS website is TinyMCE.
Theer are however alternative content editor extensions that you can use with your website.
We like the JCE Content Editor and it is this editor that we focus on here in our Working with Content Editors article.
How do TinyMCE and JCE compare?
There used to be a BIG difference.
Prior to Joomla! 4 the TinyMCE editor did not offer as big a range of features as JCE.
Since Joomla! 4 the default content editor is much improved.
Both enable you to create editor profiles for users depending upon their status: editor, super user etc.
We recommend that you try using both; maybe JCE for website administrators and TinyMCE for contributors.
When we configure WYNCHCO Joomla! 4 Website Designs, we offer to install and configure the JCE Content Editor for you.
Reasons: see below.
JCE not only supports easy upload and embedding of images within Articles, but also lots of control over how images are displayed.
JCE enables quick and easy switching via a toggle button (see image) between WYSIWYG and HTML views whilst editing an Article.
JCE offers FOUR alternative EDITOR PROFILES which can be separately assigned to different users.
This is really useful when you manage a team of website contributors and want to limit what they can and cannot do when editing website content.

Assigning a Content Editor to Users
If you choose to install a 3rd party content editor extension then you will need to assign it either:
- globally for all users as the DEFAULT EDITOR in the GLOBAL CONFIGURATION screen of your website dashboard, or
- to individual Users via the dashboard screen for each User.

Using the Content Editor
Use whichever content editor you like best to edit website content in the Front End or the dashboard.
First sign in
Select the Sign in Panel to sign into the Front End.
Or the Sign in menu link from the Bottom Menu.
By default, the Sign in panel is visible at the foot of every screen in a WYNCHCO Joomla! 4 Website Design.
Then look for the COG
When you select the arrow next to the COG you will see a pop-up list of options.
Providing you have signed in as a User with Special Permissions then you will see an Edit option.
If you cannot see the Edit option then you have not signed in as a user with special permissions.
